A powerful new exhibition has opened at the The Columbus Museum—and it brings the work of a rising contemporary portrait artist to Columbus for the very first time.

Monica Ikegwu: Through the Veil is the first museum-organized solo exhibition by Baltimore-based painter Monica Ikegwu. Created specifically for the museum, the exhibition features an entirely new body of work that expands upon the artist’s distinctive monochromatic portraiture.

The exhibition grew out of the museum’s 2024 acquisition of Chidera (2021), a painting by Ikegwu that entered the collection with support from the Alma Thomas Society. Following the enthusiastic response to that work, museum leadership invited the artist to develop a full exhibition for Columbus audiences.

The result is Through the Veil—a thoughtful exploration of identity, perception, and the subtle ways people present themselves to the world.

Ikegwu is widely recognized for her intimate portrait paintings, often focusing on single or paired figures rendered with striking simplicity and emotional depth. In this new series, she builds upon those familiar compositions while introducing new visual motifs that explore the ideas of concealment and revelation.

In several paintings, a sheer curtain partially obscures the sitter’s face or body. The delicate veil becomes a recurring symbol throughout the exhibition, prompting viewers to reflect on how identity is shaped by what we choose to show and what we keep hidden.

Through these carefully rendered oil portraits, Ikegwu invites audiences to ask deeper questions about human connection. How well do we truly know the people around us? What parts of ourselves remain private, even in our closest relationships?

“Just like the title of the exhibition, I hope that we can move past the veil before us to truly understand the people that stand on the other side,” Ikegwu said.

For exhibition curator Jonathan F. Walz, the artist’s work fits naturally within the museum’s long-standing interest in figurative painting.

“Over time our community has supported the work of multiple artists creating figurative work in a realistic style—from Henry Nordhausen and Bo Bartlett to Amy Sherald and Steven Tette,” Walz explained. “The work in Monica Ikegwu: Through the Veil offers a contemporary variation on this endlessly fascinating theme. The artist’s exploration of seeing and being seen is particularly relevant for a museum context.”

The exhibition also reflects the museum’s ongoing commitment to presenting contemporary artists and expanding its collection through collaborations with patrons and supporters.

To celebrate the opening, the museum will host a Public Celebration on Saturday, March 21 from 3–7 PM, inviting the community to experience the exhibition through a variety of interactive activities. Visitors can expect artist-led tours with Ikegwu, hands-on artmaking opportunities, a scavenger hunt, public performances, food trucks, and more.

The free event welcomes visitors of all ages and offers a chance to engage directly with the artist and her work.
