April boasts one of the most beloved annual concerts of the year. Symphony on the Sand at Callaway Gardens, now in its twelfth year, features the Columbus Symphony Orchestra live on Robin Lake Beach in Pine Mountain, Georgia. The music is programmed to be extremely accessible, and the atmosphere is unparalleled in our region.

Every year, hundreds of people gather on the beach at sunset to hear a full concert of music performed by the CSO and their beloved Maestro George Del Gobbo. This year's concert theme is "As American as Apple Pie" and features music from American composers.

Symphony on the Sand is the final event for Callaway's Celebrate Spring! season. Proceeds from the concert benefit the Ida Cason Callaway Foundation, Callaway Gardens’ not-for-profit organization. According to Callaway's website, "The Ida Cason Callaway Foundation supports the gardens' mission to connect people and nature in a way that benefits both." Symphony on the Sand contributes to the continuation of the Foundation’s many arts, educational, and horticultural programs.

General seating on the lawn at Robin Lake Beach is available online in advance for $30 or at the gate day of the event for $35.  Admission is discounted for Callaway Gardens Annual Members. This is a family friendly event, and children of all ages are welcome to attend.

The repertoire for the concert includes American music by composers including Copland, Carmichael, and Gerschwin. Guests can expect to hear musical favorites like Georgia on My Mind, Uptown Girl, selections from Porgy and Bess, a medley of Motown hits, and several marches by Sousa. The total run time for the concert will be approximately an hour and a half.

It's helpful to know that guests should plan to use the Robin Lake Beach gate on U.S. Highway 27. The gate opens at 5 p.m. with the concert beginning at 8 p.m, and the dress is casual. It's good to plan to arrive early, because the event historically boasts a large crowd. Guests are encouraged to bring their own picnic, and those with lawn seating should plan to bring a chair or blanket from which to enjoy the show. ◼︎
