On Feburary 20, 2024, the Youth Orchestra of Greater Columbus will present their annual Pops Concert. This year's performance will feature the music of John Williams, and be performed at Northside High School.
The Youth Orchestra of Greater Columbus offers high-quality music education instruction and performance opportunities to more than 80 young people in the Chattahoochee Valley. This season marks their 30th year serving local youth – making the total number of students they've served in the thousands.
"To me, YOGC isn’t just a program, just an orchestra, or a place to be on Monday nights," said Ian Harkness, who's been a member for nine years. "YOGC is a home; a community of like-minded individuals who all work toward the same goal: passionately making incredible music. The opportunities that YOGC has provided will always stay with me; from being in chamber groups, community outreach events, to playing repertoire that professionals play, it’s safe to say YOGC is no average youth orchestra."
YOGC is comprised of two main ensembles and a series of chamber groups that play events year-round. The String Orchestra is made up of the organization's youngest members, while the Symphonic Orchestra features mainly high school students. This year, YOGC will perform in 30 different events to honor their 30th anniversary.
“YOGC is my musical family, which has nurtured my knowledge, love and appreciation of music and fine arts," said 11th grader Alexandra Greenfield. "I look forward to Monday rehearsal each week to work with my talented coaches and conductor, and to play beautiful music with my orchestra. The Art pillar from YOGC is exactly what I need to balance my Academic and Athletic life." Greenfield began playing with the organization in 6th grade and joined with only 9 months of experience.
