This week, the Springer Opera House unveiled a new discount ticket program aimed at increasing accessibility for underserved, low-income individuals and families in the Columbus area.
The Gateway Program will offer highly-reduced ticket prices for patrons who meet eligibility guidelines and then register to participate in the initiative. The goal is to provide increased access to the theatre for individuals who may not otherwise be able to attend.
The new program has been developed by the Springer after years of extensive research on other impactful ticketing programs at theatres around the nation.
Springer Director of Marketing and Audience Development, Allie Kent, began researching potential discount programs before the outbreak of COVID-19. "Our community has one of the highest poverty rates in the state, which prevents people from participating in the arts," Kent said. "Our goal with this specific program is to create a supportive environment where everyone who desires can enjoy live theatre without impacting their household budget."
Patrons who meet specific eligibility requirements, as detailed on the theatre's website, can purchase up to four tickets to see select shows for $7. Patrons must be 18 or older and enrolled in one or more federal assistance programs.
"We believe that theatre has the power to bring people together and create lasting connections," said Danielle Patterson-Varner, Springer CEO and Executive Producer. "This new program is designed to remove financial barriers and welcome a broader audience into our theatre family. We're excited to see the positive impact this will have on our community."
To enroll in the Gateway Program, patrons must go to the Springer Opera House Box Office with a photo ID and complete an enrollment form. The form will be kept on file for one year, at which time information will need to be updated.
Valid performances will be posted on the production’s website page days prior to the opening of the show. The program will be limited to the first 40 households to enroll in the first year.
