Four young musicians from Columbus, Georgia, have come together to form something truly remarkable—The Valkyria String Quartet. Brought together by a shared passion for chamber music and a drive to grow as artists, these talented young musicians have quickly evolved into a polished ensemble. With a name that hints at strength and unity, the group is now preparing to take their sound beyond the local stage to represent Columbus, Georgia at one of Europe’s premier summer music festivals.
“We started as a group for the Chamber Music Program in Fall 2024,” recalls violist Eva Ruiz. “But we quickly developed a strong bond, both as musicians and as friends.” Ruiz said their coach, Professor Samuel Vargas, has played a vital role since day one. “Samuel was there at every rehearsal, often staying late to support us. When we mentioned forming a new quartet, he encouraged us enthusiastically,” Ruiz explained.
That encouragement propelled the group toward a remarkable opportunity: becoming the quartet-in-residence at Italy’s Orvieto Musica Festival this summer. The festival runs from June 15 through July 5 in the historic hill town of Orvieto, renowned for its breathtaking landscapes and vibrant artistic community. For three weeks, the quartet will take part in coaching sessions, masterclasses, and performances with musicians from around the world.
“Our professor, Wendy Warner, spoke very highly of the festival,” shared cellist Kevin Zapata. “We had just finished preparing for a national competition, so we used that momentum to apply. When we were selected, it was a moment of great excitement and affirmation for all of us.”

Their program reflects thoughtful curation and personality. “We are preparing Beethoven’s String Quartet No. 4 and Grieg’s String Quartet No. 1,” said second violinist Elizabeth Bergmann. “Both are rich in character but different enough to keep the audience engaged.” They’ll also close with a splash of flair: Piazzolla’s La Muerte del Ángel. “It’s a short, sweet tango piece suggested by Eva to end the program with contrast,” Bergmann explains.
Their rehearsals are where their chemistry takes shape. “We start by catching up and addressing concert details,” said Bergmann. “Then we tune and work on one or two movements depending on upcoming performances. We often record runs and listen back together to discuss what needs improvement. Sometimes we rehearse sections with different instrument combinations to hear how the parts interact and figure out what needs to stand out.”
They practice often, usually several times per week, sometimes for hours on end when a concert is near. Those sessions can be intense—but they’re also where the group’s creativity shines. Whether it’s phrasing a difficult passage or laughing over inside jokes, it’s clear their strength lies in the trust and joy they’ve built over time.

Beneath the surface, the group has developed deep respect for one another and the process. “We all get frustrated at times and also experience satisfaction in performance,” Elizabeth reflects. “Sharing our playing is vulnerable, but it helps us grow as artists. We understand how to give and receive criticism respectfully.”
While the quartet doesn’t follow a strict hierarchy, each member brings their own role. “There’s no official system of leadership,” said first violinist Jace Elliott. “But the first violin often takes precedence in musical decisions, with the cello grounding the harmony. The second violin and viola support, which makes their parts challenging and rewarding.”
“Kevin is undoubtedly the logistical manager,” Elliott added. “He has the practical initiative and network to make things happen. Eva and Elizabeth focus on promotion, while I mostly take musical initiative but also help with documents.”
Their trip to Orvieto isn’t just about performing—it’s about growing. “Artistically, I look forward to new horizons through coaching and masterclasses, and working with new peers,” Elliott said. “Personally, I hope to make new friends from around the world and experience the rich culture of Orvieto.”
Zapata echoed the sentiment: “Collaborating with musicians worldwide is a unique chance to learn and grow. Chamber music is about listening to and creating something meaningful together. This festival is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”
From their very first rehearsals in Columbus, where they struggled to shape a sound, to standing on the threshold of a major European debut, the Valkyria String Quartet’s story has been one of hard work, trust, and vision. “It’s fitting that we chose the name Valkyria,” Eva reflected. “It reminds us of strength and courage—qualities we need not just to play, but to grow together as a group. Every rehearsal, every performance is like a small battle we face together, and that makes our success even sweeter.”
Their journey hasn’t been without challenges. From juggling schoolwork and practice schedules to managing the delicate balance of four distinct voices, they’ve had to push past doubts and fatigue. Yet every difficulty has deepened their bond—and the Valkyrie spirit they embody. What began as a class project has become a mission: to rise together, take risks, and share their sound with the world.
As they prepare to travel across the Atlantic, the Valkyria String Quartet carries not only their instruments but also the pride of their community and the promise of a bright future. In less than a year since forming, they’ve secured their first international residency—becoming the first ensemble from Columbus State University to represent the school abroad. Their journey is just beginning, but it already stands as a powerful testament to how passion, friendship, and resilience can elevate a local group into inspiring ambassadors for their art. ◼️
